Two hospitalized after explosion at chemical plant in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (NBC, KYMA) - Two people are hurt in a chemical plant explosion in Louisville.

Fire crews responded to the explosion at Carbide Industries just after 11 a.m. Eastern Tuesday.

According to the Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Chief, two contractors were injured in a small flash fire and taken to the hospital to be treated for burns.

The workers were reportedly transporting a 5,000 pound portable tote holding calcium carbide at the time of the explosion.

The conditions of the workers are not known at this time.

Carbide has a long history of safety violations, including three workers deaths.

This latest incident remains under investigation.
