Seven-year-old girl stabbed to death on Chicago sidewalk

CHICAGO (NBC, KYMA) - A seven-year-old girl was stabbed multiple times while walking on a Chicago sidewalk on Saturday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital following the incident.

It happened around 11:55 a.m. Central in Chicago's East Chatham neighborhood.

The young girl was walking down the street when a seemingly random woman, who did not know her, approached and stabbed the girl multiple times in the back.

In surveillance footage, witnesses could be seen rushing over to the area where the child was attacked.

Several other witnesses could also be seen chasing down the suspect after the incident.

Police said bystanders detained the woman later being taken into custody after receiving treatment at a local hospital.

It was not immediately known what, if anything, prompted the attack.
