Man accused of stabbing 11 people at a Michigan Walmart found mentally ill

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (NBC, KYMA) - A Northern Michigan man accused of stabbing 11 people at a Traverse City-area Walmart last year has been sent to a forensic psychiatric facility after pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.

Bradford Gille was facing one count of terrorism and 11 counts of attempted murder for the July 2025 attack that injured 11 people.

Gille waived his preliminary examination Tuesday, and the judge accepted the findings of a forensic examiner who determined he was legally insane at the time of the attacks.

Gille will now be committed to a forensic psychiatric facility for at least 60 days, with prosecutors able to seek continued treatment through probate court.

"Mr. Gille lacked the substantial capacity to appreciate the nature and quality or the wrongfulness of his conduct and lacked substantial capacity to conform his conduct to the requirements of the law at the time these charges occurred," said District Court Judge Michael Stepka.

After the initial evaluation, a petition may be filed in probate court to keep Gille in a psychiatric facility for further treatment.
