NASA’s Roman Space Telescope could change the way scientists study the universe

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (NBC, KYMA) - NASA is preparing to make history Sunday, launching a next-gen telescope expected to upend our understanding of the cosmos.

The Nancy Grace Roman telescope will rocket into space from Cape Canaveral, Florida on board a Space-X Falcon heavy rocket at 7:26 a.m. eastern time, if all goes according to schedule.

Roman will orbit a million miles from earth to survey vast stretches of space, beyond our solar system.

Helping scientists to gain a better understanding of some of the biggest mysteries of the universe including dark energy and dark matter.

NASA officials say it's going to revolutionize astronomer's understanding of the stars.. With its field of view far greater than that of the Hubble telescope.

Roman's mission is planned for five years, though NASA says the telescope may have enough fuel for five additional years.

The telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first Chief Astronomer.
