Police in Virginia arrest suspect wearing ‘Ghostface’ costume

LORTON, Va. (CBS, KYMA) - Police in Lorton, Virginia arrested a man after he allegedly vandalized a community center while wearing a Halloween costume for more than a month.

Detectives with the Fairfax County Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division arrested the suspect after conducting a surveillance operation connecting him to several destruction of property incidents at a Lorton homeowners community center.

Police said the suspect caused about $8,000 worth of damage in six incidents dating back to July 9.

Officials said in each incident, the suspect broke windows with rocks, a hammer and cinder blocks while wearing a Halloween costume.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect wearing a "Ghostface" mask and robe from the movie "Scream." He also wore fluorescent gloves and white shoes with fluorescent laces.

Detectives conducted a surveillance operation near the homeowner's community center on Aug. 17 and around 4:24 a.m. Eastern, detectives saw Zion Gibbs, 22, of Lorton, walking in the area wearing the same costume.

Detectives saw Gibbs grab bricks and run toward the homeowner's community center.

Gibbs was stopped by officers equipped with body-worn cameras and taken into custody.

He was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and charged with three felony counts of destruction of property, three misdemeanor counts of destruction of property and wearing a mask in public.

Gibbs was held without bond.
