Teen dies after fall from abandoned building

NEW ORLEANS (NBC, KYMA) - A 17-year-old has died after falling from a stairwell inside of an abandoned high rise in New Orleans Saturday.

According to police, it happened at Plaza Tower, a private property not owned by the city, in the Central Business District.

A group of friends, including the victim, entered the building that police say was fenced off.

The group went up to a higher floor and were attempting to descend a flight of stairs when the victim fell. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

Police believed the group was consuming alcohol when it occurred.

The New Orleans police chief said trespassing charges would be addressed at a later time to allow family and friends to grieve.

Another teen was hospitalized for a deep laceration to their arm and wrist.

An investigation into the matter is also ongoing.
