Hurricane Lala downgraded to a tropical storm

HILO, Hawaii (NBC, KYMA) - Lala was downgraded back to a tropical storm Sunday as it passes to the south of Hawaii's smaller islands.

The storm slammed the Big Island on Saturday as a Category 1 hurricane, bringing fierce winds, pouring rain and flooding, leaving one person dead in a storm related car crash, according to Gov. Josh Green (D-Hawaii).

There are also reports of a number of homes being swept away in the downpour.

Severe conditions are expected to spread westward Sunday, but deteriorate across Oahu.

Hawaii is under a Tropical Storm Warning and residents are urged to remain sheltered.
