Potential cyberattack on water system in Georgia

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. (NBC, KYMA) - The Clayton County Water Authority said it's investigating a potential cyberattack after its water pressure dropped in certain areas last week.

The acknowledgment comes as the FBI warns water systems in at least seven states were targeted after a "temporary disruption affected a portion of its operational systems and water service."

Léargas Chief Security Officer Patrick Kelley said, "It's happening in quite a few places, and what we're seeing is a steady escalation."

In most cases, Kelley said the affected utilities rely on internet-connected systems so small staffs can monitor operations remotely.

Officials with the Clayton County Water Authority declined to speak with WXIA Tuesday afternoon, but said water service was safe and restored within hours.

Multiple sources told NBC News Iran is likely behind a recent wave of cyberattacks on municipal water systems in several states.

Kelley said utilities should be taking a hard look at which systems are connected to the internet and whether they need to be.
