Giant sinkhole swallows truck in Texas

BEAUMONT, TX. (NBC, KYMA) - The Beaumont Police and Fire Department say a giant sinkhole opened up at about 2:15 a.m. Central Sunday, just as the driver of a pickup truck was traveling through a West Beaumont intersection in Texas.

Police say the sinkhole estimated at 20-feet wide and 20-feet deep and was filled with several feet of water gushing from a broken water main, which the city says caused the sinkhole to develop.

Police say the pickup truck was wedged at a 45-degree angle. With the front of the pickup against a large piece of concrete, preventing it from falling deeper into the hole.

Police say the driver crawl out uninjured.

KFDM says a Spanky's wrecker pulled the pickup truck out of the sinkhole.

Witnesses say the wrecker crew hooked up chains to the back of the pickup and used a large wrecker to slowly pull it out.

The city says work to fix the sinkhole and repair the street could take some time.
