‘Smokenado’ towers over wildfire in Utah

MILLARD COUNTY, Utah (CBS, KYMA) - A towering fire whirl, or "smokenado," was seen swirling in the distance as the Widemouth 2 Fire burned near Kanosh in Millard County, Utah Tuesday.

Evacuation orders were issued for parts of Millard County late Tuesday night, with residents in the area of Turkey Track Lane and Cemetery Road told to leave immediately.

Video from Copeland Anderson, Millard County Fire Warden, shows the smoke swirling on Tuesday.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, fire whirls are closely related to other swirling atmospheric phenomena such as dust devils, water spouts, and tornadoes, and are capable of wind damage similar to weak or moderate tornadoes.

As of Tuesday, the fire has burned over 4,380 acres and is 0% contained. To keep up-to-date on the fire, click here.
