Two stabbed in Manhattan in ‘potential hate crime’

NEW YORK (CBS, KYMA) - A man was arrested Thursday after two people were stabbed in Manhattan in broad daylight.

According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, both victims, an Asian man and a Jewish man, were stabbed in separate attacks on the Upper West Side.

"The NYPD has arrested 51-year-old Raul Morales in connection with both assaults, and no other people are being sought," Commissioner Tisch said. "According to victim and witness statements, Morales yelled 'Allahu Akbar' during both attacks. The NYPD is currently evaluating whether this is a potential hate crime."

Both victims were taken to the hospital following the attacks and were expected to survive, according to the commissioner.

Lidia Lander, who witnessed one of the stabbings, recorded the footage showing a Jewish man sitting on the ground with his hand to his chest, before first responders examine him at the scene.
