Man who pled guilty to killing former Minnesota house speaker and her husband sentenced

(NBC, KYMA) - Vance Boelter, the man who pleaded guilty to killing a Democratic lawmaker and her husband, was sentenced to two consecutive life terms Thursday in Minnesota.

Boelter agreed back in June to plead guilty to killing former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and critically wounding State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.

Boelter, who pleaded guilty to six total counts so federal prosecutors would not seek the death penalty, also received an additional 40 year sentence during his hearing Thursday.

He has also admitted to spending months identifying and stalking his targets before attacking both couples in their homes on June 14, 2025.

Boelter also faces state charges, including two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, impersonating a police officer and animal cruelty.
