POWELL, Ohio (NBC, KYMA) - Authorities in Ohio are investigating a heartbreaking tragedy after five people died while trying to save someone in a river.

The victims drowned Sunday night in the Scioto River in Powell after one person entered the water to swim and others went in to help but also began struggling.

A passing driver called 911 after spotting a distressed child running along the road, saying family members were in the river.

Two women were pulled from the water, but later died at the hospital.

Recovery crews found the bodies of three missing men Monday afternoon.

Two young children who were at the scene are now in the care of Delaware County Job and Family Services.
