Bureau of Labor Statistics says U.S. economy added 57,000 jobs in June

(NBC, KYMA) - The U.S. economy added just 57,000 jobs in June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobs figure was less than half the number added in may and well below the 115,000 predicted by forecasters.

While job creation slowed, the unemployment rate ticked down by one-tenth of a point to 4.2%.

The latest statistics also say hourly earnings rose by 3.5%, but that's below the rate of inflation.

When asked for a comment on the latest figures, a White House spokesperson said: "The June jobs report reinforces that the American labor market remains solid thanks to President Trump's economic agenda. Manufacturing and factory construction jobs continued to grow in June, especially for durable goods like steel, aluminum, and other metals."
