Archaeologists uncover various artifacts as workers rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral

CBS

PARIS (CBS, KYMA) - Nearly seven years after a fire nearly destroyed Notre Dame, the rebuilding effort is revealing more than just a restored cathedral.

As workers renovate the plaza outside the famous landmark, archaeologists have uncovered Roman coins, Medieval pottery, and the remains of centuries-old homes.

It's offering a unique glimpse into life nearly 2,000 years ago.

"It's a rare opportunity for us to work on something that's really tangibly going to make a difference on the history of Paris," said Lucie Altenburg, a conservator for the Paris Archaeological Unit.

Among the most intriguing finds are ceramic shards marked with mysterious inscriptions that have yet to be deciphered.
