Loud boom rattles New England residents

(NBC, KYMA) - A loud boom rattled residents across New England Saturday afternoon.

The mysterious boom was heard in at least three states, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and residents were completely caught off guard by the thunderous sound.

NASA initially confirmed a fireball over New England at 2:06 p.m. Eastern Saturday, with a speed of about 75,000 miles per hour.

NASA said the energy released during breakup is estimated to be the equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT, which accounts for the massive booms.
