Preliminary hearing for man accused of killing Charlie Kirk delayed

PROVO, Utah (NBC, KYMA) - The next hearing for Charlie Kirk's suspected killer has been delayed.

In a virtual hearing Friday, the judge agreed that the massive amount of evidence in the case made the delay necessary.

Tyler Robinson is accused of shooting and killing Kirk, and faces a potential death sentence if convicted in the conservative activist's murder.

Fourth District Judge Tony Graf also ruled Friday that cameras and microphones will continue to be allowed in the courtroom during the proceedings.

"Electronic media coverage provides a means to facilitate the public's right of access to court proceedings for those who cannot physically occupy the limited space available in a courtroom. Live streaming in particular, allows as many people as are interested to observe the justice system at work and hold our branches of government accountable to the guarantees of due process."

The preliminary hearing, originally scheduled to begin on May 18, will now be held July 6 through July 10.
