U.K. passes bill to create smoke-free generation

LONDON (CBS, KYMA) - The United Kingdom is taking drastic steps to create a smoke-free generation.

Parliament passed a law this week banning the sale of tobacco products to anyone born in 2009 or later. This means children age 17 or younger will face a lifelong ban on buying cigarettes.

Polling suggests the majority of the British public back the ban.

"I gave it up eight years ago, yeah I think it's a terrific idea," said one London resident.

"I think any effort to reduce smoking is good but I just wonder how effective it will be," said another London resident.

"Overall, I think it will be a good thing for public health," said another London resident.

The landmark legislation also gives the government new powers to regulate vaping products, including rules on flavor and packaging.

Vaping will be banned in cars with children, as well as in playgrounds, outside schools, and near hospitals.

The law could take effect as soon as next week.
