Wednesday is Tax Day

(CNN, KYMA) - Wednesday, April 15, 2026 is Tax Day, a deadline for most federal and state income tax returns.

The IRS estimates more than 50 million Americans benefited from at least one of the deductions Congress approved last year.

Experts advise using electronic filing for last-minute submissions, but for mailing tax returns, they suggest going to the Post Office and requesting a dated local postmark.

Taxpayers who can't make the deadline can request an automatic six-month extension. Otherwise, they'll face a late-filing fee for each month their federal return is overdue.

Even with an extension, filers still need to pay what they owe, even if it's an estimate. That's to avoid a separate late-payment penalty.

Experts say people who can't pay what they owe should still request an extension. That way, they'll face one penalty plus interest instead of two.
