Asian elephant breaks out of enclosure at New Mexico zoo

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (CBS, KYMA) - An Asian elephant named Alice took herself on a leisurely stroll through ABQ BioPark in Albuquerque, New Mexico after escaping her enclosure Sunday.

ABQ BioPark released the footage showing 52-year-old Alice slowly walking around the zoo grounds, where she can be seen snacking on plants and gently inspecting structures.

In a press release, ABQ BioPark said Alice was found by zoo security outside of her primary habitat area around 7:30 a.m. Mountain Sunday.

"Animal care staff were notified and arrived on site within 10 minutes and initiated emergency response protocol," the zoo said. "The staff were able to call Alice safely back to her habitat. No other elephants left the habitat, and no staff were ever in harm’s way. Alice has no injuries but will remain under close monitoring by animal care staff."

No guests were present at the time, according to the zoo, who added that they delayed opening for 30 minutes "while paths were cleared of debris from where Alice ate plants and trees in the vicinity of her habitat."

The zoo said staff located a section of perimeter fencing to the elephant habitat that was "compromised."

It has since been secured with repairs, and reinforcement was underway.
