Trial for former police officer in Uvalde underway

(CNN, KYMA) - The trial of a former police officer who responded when a gunman attacked an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas got underway Monday.

Adrian Gonzales is facing charges of child abandonment and endangerment.

Prosecutors allege Gonzales failed to engage, distract or delay the teenage gunman when he opened fire at Robb Elementary School in 2022. The shooting killed 19 children and two teachers.

Gonzales denies any wrongdoing. His lawyer says Gonzales actively responded to the threat.

The trial is taking place in corpus christi. It was moved out of Uvalde County because of the impact the shooting had on the community.
