Firefighters in New York City battle building fire

NEW YORK CITY (NBC, KYMA) - A major fire broke out Tuesday morning in an Upper West Side building in New York City.

Flames and black smoke poured out of the top of this six-story building as the fire spread. At times, flaming debris could be seen falling to the street below.

So far, there is no word on what may have sparked this blaze or if anyone was injured.

Department of Buildings records show the building contains 21 units.

The fire, which appeared to be focused on the upper floor and roof, was escalated to a fourth alarm around 9:00 a.m. Eastern.

However, firefighters seemed be gaining the upper hand on the fire a short time later.
