Massive fire engulfs factory in Australia
SYDNEY (CBS, KYMA) - A massive inferno was brought under control after engulfing a waste facility in western Sydney overnight into Sunday, fire officials said.
According to Fire and Rescue New South Wales (FRNSW), "A huge fire ball erupted, sending flames up to 150 metres into the sky" over a property in North St Mary's at around 11:00 p.m. Australia Eastern Daylight Time Saturday.
"A large chemical tank was blown into the air and fist-sized chunks of concrete blocks rained down" on dozens of firefighters, FRNSW said.
The explosion blew holes in neighboring buildings and was "one of the biggest fires seen in western Sydney for many years," they added.
More than 200 firefighters were dispatched to battle the blaze, two of whom sustained minor injuries to their hands, the fire service said.
The cause of the fire was unknown.
