Planes circle around or divert from Reagan Airport

ARLINGTON, Va. (CBS, KYMA) - Planes were seen circling around or diverting from Reagan Washington National Airport outside Washington Tuesday, as seen in an animation captured by a flight-tracking service.

Flightradar24 provided a visualization of the disruption to flights as a temporary ground stop was ordered due to a "security threat" on a flight.

"United Airlines Flight 512 landed at Reagan National Airport around 11:30 am and then stopped on an adjacent runway away from the terminal in response to a security threat," the airport said in a statement.

"Airport runways remained closed until passengers were safely offloaded and bused to the terminal. Runways reopened at 12:50 pm."

"Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police are conducting a thorough investigation with the assistance of multiple law enforcement partners," the statement continued.

"Several flights were diverted to other airports during the runway closure," Ronald Reagan National Airport said.
