November 5 is National Donut Day

(CNN, KYMA) - This is a day most of us can eagerly get behind as Wednesday, November 5 is National Donut Day.

The popular pastry comes in all kinds of forms, whether frosted or filled, or with sprinkles on top, and it's a likely sure bet your neighborhood has a donut shop that people gravitate to.

The history of the term "donut" may date back to 1808. That's the earliest recorded use of the word in a short story in a Boston Times article.

A year later, noted short story writer Washington Irving referenced donuts in his book, "History of New York." His description was of sweetened dough, fried in hog's fat.

You can celebrate Donut Day by stopping by your local store, and maybe bring a box in to the office for your co-workers!

Mark the day on social media by using #NationalDonutDay.
