Former Congressman George Santos released from prison

NEW YORK (CBS, KYMA) - Former New York Congressman George Santos is out of prison and promises he's a changed man.

Last week, President Donald Trump commuted the sentence of the New York Republican. Santos served less than three months of a seven-year sentence for wire fraud and identity theft stemming from his 2022 campaign.

He spoke to CBS New York about his stay at a federal correctional institution in New Jersey. Santos says he was dehumanized and degraded by the staff there and wrote three suicide notes, though never acted on them.

Now a free man, he's promising to turn his life around and focus on prison reform and helping troubled youth.

"I have been given an opportunity to rewrite the ending of my life. And I will make sure that it's as honorable as humanly possible and above reproach at all times because it would be an absolute ungodly irresponsibility to not take advantage of this and do it in the best way possible. I just want to do good," Santos shared.

As part of the clemency granted by President Trump, santos is no longer be required to pay nearly $400,000 in restitution to his victims.
