Manhunt underway after gang of thieves steal prices jewels at the Louvre
PARIS (CBS, KYMA) - A manhunt was underway for a gang of thieves who carried out a daring daylight raid on Paris's Louvre Museum Sunday, stealing priceless jewels including French royal necklaces and tiaras.
Footage filmed by tour guide Claudine Hemingway (@ClaudineBleuBlondeRouge) shows the stolen items on display, before the brazen theft, in the museum's Gallery of Apollo.
This includes the Marie-Louise necklace, a tiara worn by the Empress Eugenie, a large jewel-encrusted bow, and a crown, necklace, and earrings worn by Queen Marie-Amelie.
French President Emmanuel Macron said authorities were doing everything to recover the items and bring the perpetrators to justice.
"The theft committed at the Louvre is an attack on a heritage that we cherish because it is our history," Macron said in a statement.
The museum said it would remain closed on October 20 following the robbery.
