Elephants at Oregon Zoo smash pumpkins

PORTLAND, Ore. (CBS, KYMA) - Elephants at the Oregon Zoo smashed, and snacked on, giant pumpkins at the 27th annual Squishing of the Squash in Portland, Oregon Thursday.

Video released by the Oregon Zoo shows a herd of Asian elephants crushing the oversized pumpkins.

"They did the mash," the zoo said in a post on X.

In a press release, zoo officials said the event is a tradition dating back to 1999, when a local farmer dropped off a prize-winning 828-pound pumpkin for elephants to snack on.

This year's pumpkin collection included a 1,000-pound gourd, the zoo said.
