October 13 marks U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday
(CNN, KYMA) - Every day is a good day to celebrate the nation's service members, but Monday is extra special because it's the U.S. Navy's actual birthday, observed every year on October 13.
It was on that date in 1775 that the Continental Congress greenlighted the first U.S. Naval Force.
This makes Monday the Navy's 250th birthday.
According to NationalDayCalendar.com, the Continental Navy had just two ships and a crew of eighty men at the time of its inception.
As of now, it has more than 340,000 active duty personnel and upwards of 71,000 reservists.
