Ice rink at Rockefeller Center now open

NEW YORK CITY (NBC, KYMA) - The world's most iconic ice skating rink is now open for the season in the heart of New York City.

The Rink at Rockefeller Center kicked off its holiday season Saturday. Ice skaters from near and far hoped to be the first to take to the Rink on its opening day.

The Rink originally opened in 1936 as a temporary attraction to draw visitors to Rockefeller Center's Outdoor Plaza, and in 1939, it became a permanent fixture, evolving into one of the city's most legendary landmarks and most visited sites.

More than a quarter of a million skaters flock to the rink annually, with skaters of all ages definitely enjoying the experience.

"We're ice skating on the rink. This is like a dream come true because we're from Australia," said one skater.

"We came all this way, we wanted to be the first ones on the ice, we didn't quite make it, but we're having a goof time," said another skater.

"It's about the happiest place, the love the passion, just being on the ice," said another skater.

The Rink at Rockefeller Center is now open daily through March. Ticket prices start at $22 per person.
