Flights delayed as government shutdown hits air traffic control
(CNN, KYMA) - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says it's been delaying flights due to air traffic controller shortages.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy blames the government shutdown. He says many controllers are calling out sick since they're no longer getting paid.
An FAA operations plan says at least a dozen air traffic control facilities braced for shortages Monday night.
The agency reports initial delays in Denver, Newark and Burbank.
Officials say the Burbank tower outright closed, forcing pilots to coordinate with other.
A deal to end the shutdown doesn't appear to be in sight with the cost of healthcare remaining a sticking point.
