Planet-first diet could feed the world by 2050

(CNN, KYMA) - A new scientific analysis suggests adopting a diet that is good for the planet could feed the world by 2050.

The report was put together by a commission comprised of leading experts from various fields from more than 35 countries.

Using advanced modeling methods, they found more than nine billion people could eat nutritiously and equitably in the decades to come if they adopted a planet-friendly diet.

This kind of diet is very similar to the mediterranean diet and focuses on fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, and a moderate amount of meat and dairy.

The diet would also improve the environment.

According to the report, about 30% of global greenhouse emissions come from food production.

The report says a planet-friendly diet could help cut those specific emissions by more than half, and also estimated nearly a third of premature deaths in the U.S. could be avoided if people followed the diet.

The report was published Thursday by the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission on healthy diets from sustainable food systems.
