Latest on the shooting at a Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints church in Michigan
GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NBC, KYMA) - Officials in Michigan held a press conference Monday afternoon to provide an update on the mass shooting and fire which took place over the weekend at a Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints church in Grand Blanc Township.
Officials confirmed five people were killed in the incident, including the suspect.
Eight others were also injured when a man, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a Marine Veteran, crashed his truck into the building and then began shooting.
He also apparently set the building on fire, before being shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire with police.
Suspected IEDs were also discovered at the scene, and everyone associated with the church has now been accounted for.
Officials say they have already conducted more than 100 interviews in last 24 hours as their investigation continues. However, a motive for the attack is not yet known.
"Evil. This was an evil act of violence. That's exactly what this was," said Chief William Renye with the Grand Blanc Township Police Department.
Governor Gretchen Witmer (D-Mich.) joined law enforcement officials for Monday's press conference.
"These are places that we go to feel connected, to feel safe, to be together. But today, this place has been shattered by bullets and broken glass, and this might be a familiar pain, but it hurts all the same.
While the good men and women who are working hard are doing so with due diligence at this juncture, speculation is unhelpful and it can be downright dangerous. So just ask that people lower the temperature of rhetoric. Keep your loved ones close and keep this community close to your hearts."
Gov. Gretchen Witmer (D-Mich.)
