Elusive shipwreck found in Lake Michigan 140 years later
(CNN, KYMA) - A ship that sank nearly 140 years ago in Lake Michigan has finally been found.
Researchers say they've discovered the F.J. King, a wooden schooner that sank in a storm back in 1886. The vessel was dubbed a "ghost ship" because it eluded search efforts for decades.
The Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association used sonar technology to locate the wreck earlier this year near the coastal town of Bailey's Harbor.
Researchers say the ship's hull is remarkably intact.
Citizen scientists joined the project, becoming the first people to lay eyes on the F.J. King since the night it went down.
The association's president says hundreds of ships still remain undiscovered deep in Lake Michigan's waters.
Researchers say advances in technology could make more shipwreck discoveries likely in the years ahead.
