August 19 is National Potato Day

(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Tuesday, August 19 is National Potato Day, a day when the starchy side dish gets to take center stage.

Whether they're baked, fried, or mashed, potatoes are a staple for many meals.

There are 4,000 varieties of them, according to the International Potato Center, and they're grown in a variety of colors and sizes.

Potatoes have great health benefits too. They're loaded with Vitamin C and Potassium, with no fat or cholesterol. They are, however, high in carbohydrates.

Celebrate the day by hosting a baked potato buffet where everyone can add their own fixings. Just remember: Those fixings will hike your calorie count.
