Latest on the house fire in Maryland

WALDORF, Md. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Six family members, including four young children, were killed in a house fire in Waldorf, Maryland Sunday morning, authorities say.

The fire is one of the deadliest in the state in recent memory, and is hitting the neighborhood hard.

Cellphone video shows flames shooting from the home on Declaration Court where six lives were lost, four of them were young children, Sunday. Fire officials say they were all related.

Two men were able to escape the flames unharmed.

"I have four children my own, and two of them are in that age group. And I'm just thinking, 'Where are the children? Where are they?'" said Anesha Berry, President of the Homeowners Association.

Berry said she was home when the fire broke out around 8:40 a.m. Eastern.

"I haven't really been able to look at it because it's just it's awful to know what was going on in there," Berry expressed.

According to the Fire Marshal's Office, the fire was reported by someone passing by.

Video captured shows the fire was already advanced when firefighters got there.

The cause hasn't been determined, but investigators believe it started in the enclosed porch area of the home.

"I didn't know them. I seen them, you know, on and off, but just the kids itself. You know, my whole family devastated behind it. Actually, our whole neighborhood was devastated behind it," said one neighbor.

The Fire Marshal's Office says a total of nine people lived in the home. One of the residents was not at home.

Investigators did find smoke alarms, but they're still trying to see if they activated.

Neighbors in Constitution Hills describe it as tight knit, and although there was a language barrier, the family was always friendly, and the kids often played outside.

"I just immediately went into prayer mode...praying for their rescue, their safety," said another neighbor.

Many people showed up throughout the day to see the devastation, with a woman who knew the family saying, "I'm very sad...I love the kids."

Some put down flowers, and one man said a prayer for the family in one of the deadliest fires in Maryland in recent memory.

Neighbors are doing all they can to support the family after this unimaginable loss.

Charles County Public Schools confirmed three of the children who died attended a nearby school. However, the names and ages of those victims have not yet been released.
