Houston Zoo introduces new tiny tapir
HOUSTON (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - The Houston Zoo recently welcomed its newest animal in the form of a tiny tapir.
Footage, shared by the zoo, shows the baby Baird's tapir, who they described as having a "big personality," exploring her enclosure.
According to the zoo, the female calf was born overnight on July 23 to mom Moli and dad Noah, weighing 18 pounds.
"Now at two and a half weeks, the calf is tipping the scales at 30 pounds, gaining about two pounds a day! The calf will be named by her dedicated animal care team," the zoo said. "The tapir is becoming a curious and vocal calf who often squeaks at mom and even her capybara neighbors."
The zoo added that she's currently sporting her adorable "watermelon-like spots and stripes" which act as a natural camouflage in the wild but said the markings will fade and she'll develop the "solid dark coloration typical of adult tapirs" at around seven months old.
