New study finds nicotine pouches responsible for poisoning kids
(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Nicotine patches are growing in popularity, but now, a new study finds they're also a fast-growing source of nicotine poisoning in young children.
The study looked at cases of children under six who accidentally ingested nicotine through products like vapes, gums, and lozenges.
Most types of exposures fell after 2016, but exposures from one delivery method, nicotine pouches, went way up, rising more than 760% between 2020 and 2023.
The pouches are increasingly popular with teens and young adults.
A study co-author says the pouches draw children in because they have high-concentrations of nicotine and taste good.
According to the CDC, they've become the second-most used nicotine product among young people.
The study was published last Monday in the American Academy of Pediatrics.
