Southern pudu fawn debuts at Queens Zoo

(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - A near-threatened southern pudu fawn debuted at the Queens Zoo in New York, footage released Tuesday shows.

The tiny pudu fawn was born on May 22, weighing just two pounds, according to a press release.

Native to both Chile and Argentina, southern pudus are known for being "one of the smallest deer species in the world."

The zoo said southern pudus are "near-threatened" within forests and scrubland in Chile and Argentina.

According to the International Union of Conservation and Nature's Red List, the number of mature individuals continues to decrease.

To maintain the species' genetic diversity, the zoo established its pudu program in 2005. The Queens Zoo said nine fawns have been born at the zoo since the program started.
