More than a thousand mourners attend Melissa Hortman and her husband’s funeral
MINNEAPOLIS (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - More than 1,000 mourners attended the funeral for former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, Saturday.
They were shot and killed two weeks ago at their home by a man posing as a police officer. Minnesota's chief federal prosecutor has called the attack an assassination.
Former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris were in attendance at Saturday's funeral in Minneapolis.
Governor Tim Walz said, in his eulogy, Hortman made the lives of Minnesotans better because she chose public service and politics.
"She saw the humanity in every single person she worked with. And she kept things focused on the people she served. Her mission was to get as much good done for as many people as possible. It was the Golden Rule instilled in her by her father and the passion to serve she learned from her mother.
Melissa Hortman will be remembered as the most consequential speaker in Minnesota history. I get to remember her as a close friend, a mentor, and the most talented legislator I've ever known."
Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.)
The man accused of killing the Hortmans, Vance Boelter, made a brief court appearance on Friday.
Authorities say he is on suicide watch at the Sherburne County Jail.
