New Yorkers cool down as city breaks heat record

NEW YORK (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - New Yorkers in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood had fun cooling off amid scorching conditions Tuesday as temperatures broke records in the city.

Footage captured by @newyorkcitykopp, otherwise known as Kelly Kopp, shows children and adults alike running and jumping under water pouring out of fire hydrants.

"Best neighborhood in the world! 100 degrees today in Washington Heights. Summer in New York City," Kopp said in a post on X.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), June temperatures broke records throughout the New York City region Tuesday, reaching up to 102 at Kennedy airport.

The heat wave currently impacting much of the eastern U.S. was expected to continue into Wednesday, NWS said.
