Tuesday marks four years since the Surfside building collapse

SURFSIDE, Fla. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - On June 24, 2021, Champlain Towers South partially collapsed, killing 98 people.

The building was located in Surfside, Florida, a suburb of Miami. Four people were rescued from the rubble, but one died of their injuries after arriving at the hospital later. 11 others were injured.

The 12-story beachfront condominium was demolished ten days after the collapse.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden traveled to Surfside to speak with families on July 1, 2021.

"I just wish there was something I could do to ease the pain," President Biden said.

On June 23, 2022, almost one year since the collapse, a judge gave final approval to a settlement topping $1 billion for victims of the collapse.

Champlain Towers South building collapse is considered one of the deadliest building failures in U.S. history.
