Three dead, including an infant, in a shooting at a carnival in Utah

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Three people, including an eight-month-old infant, were killed in a shooting that occurred at a Utah carnival Sunday night.

Police were already on scene at the festival when they noticed tensions rising between two groups there.

They walked over to de-escalate the situation when a 16-year-old man pulled out a gun and started firing.

Police say five people were hit by bullets.

An 18-year-old from one of the groups died on scene while an eight-month-old infant and a 41-year-old woman were also shot. They were taken to the hospital where they later died.

"The eight-month-old infant was just an innocent bystander, not connected to any of the people in either of the groups, as was the 41 year old female, just another person that happened to be in that area," said Roxeanne Vainuku with the West Valley City Police Department. "It's heartbreaking I think for all of us to see something like this happen at something that is just a real treasure, something that we really enjoy in our community."

Police say they have the shooting suspect in custody and there are no other suspects at this time.

They are still investigating what caused the groups' escalation.
