CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Walrus whistles under a waterfall
TACOMA, Wash. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - A male walrus showed off his natural vocal talents for guests visiting a Tacoma zoo on Tuesday, June 3.
Footage captured Balzak, who has lived at Washington's Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium since 2022, vocalizing from beneath the stream of his pool fountain hose.
"Watch Balzak (pronounced BELL-zik) whistling in the rain (or more accurately, his pool fountain hose) like the star he is," the zoo said on social media.
According to the zoo, walruses "are the most vocal of all pinnipeds," and can "produce roars, whistles, grunts, barks, and more" to communicate.
"A male walrus roar can reach levels of up to 120 decibels," one of the loudest sounds produced by marine mammals, the zoo said.
