Cindy McCain, U.N. World Food Programme Executive Director, on Gaza aid

(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme, spoke with Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation Sunday, saying more aid needs to get into Gaza.

"Right now, we have 500,000 people inside of Gaza that are extremely food insecure, and could be on the verge of famine if we don't help bring them back from that," McCain says. "We need to get in, and we need to get in at scale, not just a few dribble of the trucks right now."

She says Israel has "let a few trucks in" to Gaza with aid after it stopped blocking deliveries several days ago, but it's "a drop in the bucket as to what's needed."

During the interview, Brennan and McCain talked about the Trump Administration claiming they were close to brokering a deal between the Congo and Rwanda to end the war, with Brennan saying, "The numbers are staggering in terms of food insecurity."

This prompted her to ask McCain if the latter senses there's some kind of ceasefire she's close to that could help feed people, to which McCain responded saying:

"I'm hearing that there are some possible discussions going to take place in Qatar, some other discussions that have taken place in other countries and certainly other regions of Africa. What I do know is we need to hurry up. People are hungry and people have been displaced, and people...disease outbreaks are becoming more prevalent now because of some of the flooding as a result of the weather, the weather issues here. So my my purpose in this particular trip, I've been here many, many times, and my purpose in this particular trip is to see just exactly where we sit, exactly what kind of kind of foods are being allowed in number one and number two, what we can do better to help alleviate some of the, the, these, the issues that are going on here with regards to food. There's a large amount of people within DRC, Congo, particularly in the east, that don't have access to food, and if they do, it's not very much. So it's my time right now is to make sure that we're doing the very best we can to make sure people don't go hungry."
