Researchers say bees are facing a growing list of threats

READING, U.K. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - It's World Bees Day and researchers say the pollinators are in peril as they face a growing list of threats.

A report out of England says bees are under pressure from microplastics, heavy metals, pesticides and even light pollution from street lamps. Scientists say war zones are also taking a toll.

With fewer crop types being planted, bees are losing vital nutrition, raising concerns about global food security.

"Micronutrients in the food are dependent on having good pollination. So not only will we have a reduction in the food quantity that we eat, the quality will also be seriously affected," said Deepa Senapathi, co-author of the report and a professor at the University of Reading.

However, researchers says it's not too late to save the bees as they're calling for stronger pollution laws, more flowers around solar farms, and crop breeding which gives bees the pollen and nectar they need to survive.
