FDA approves three natural food dyes
(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now approved new food color additives to improve harmful artificial coloring.
The FDA announced three new natural food dyes. They're called Galdieria Extract Blue, Butterfly Pea Flower Extract, and Calcium Phosphate.
According to the agency, Galdieria Extract Blue is a type of red algae that is found in volcanic hot springs near a large crater.
Butterfly Pea Flower Extract is a blue color made from water that's extracted from dried flower petals from the plant. That dye has already been approved for use in sports and fruit drinks along with other beverages.
Lastly, Calcium Phosphate is a white and also known to use in chicken products and candies. The recent push for natural dyes stems from health concerns surrounding artificial coloring, including an increased risk of cancer.
