Maternal mortality rate increases

(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - The American healthcare system is getting worse at caring for pregnant women and new mothers, flipping a two-year trend.

The maternal mortality rate for last year rose to 19 deaths per 100,000 pregnancies, that's up 18.6% in 2023.

The mortality rate spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a quarter of the deaths being blamed on the virus.

Maternal mortality in the U.S. is one of the highest among wealthy nations. It also varies greatly between race and ethnicity.

Hispanic women have the lowest mortality rate at 13.1 per 100,000 live births. White women are next with 15.2, followed by Asian women at 17.7. Black women by far have the worst rate at 47.5.
