11 dead, multiple injured after car plows into crowd during street festival in Vancouver

UPDATE (1:12 PM): The Vancouver Police Department has provided an update on the mass casualty event at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival.

"We determined, through consultations with the City of Vancouver and festival organizers, that dedicated police officers and heavy vehicle barricades would not be deployed at the festival site. While I'm confident the joint risk assessment and public safety plan was sound, we will be working with our partners at the City of Vancouver to review all of the circumstances surrounding the planning of this event."

The death toll in Saturday night's deadly car attack in Vancouver, Canada, has grown to 11.

Officials say a vehicle drove through an enclosed area as a Filipino heritage festival was coming to a close, striking multiple people.

Dozens were injured and taken to area hospitals, and officials warned that the death toll may rise in the coming days.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and police confirmed that he was known to them and has a history of mental illness. The individual has not yet been identified or formally charged.

Officials confirmed the attack is not an act of terrorism.

"I can now say with confidence that the evidence in this case does not lead us to believe this was an act of terrorism. I can also tell you that the person we have in custody does have a significant history of interactions with police and health care professionals related to mental health. I am unable to publicly identify the person who is in custody because charges have not yet been laid."

VANCOUVER, Canada (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Nine people are dead after a driver plowed into a crowd at a bustling street festival in Vancouver, Canada, Saturday night.

The incident happened at around 8:15 p.m.

Eyewitnesses say the vehicle sped down a pedestrian-only walkway at a celebration of Filipino heritage.

Multiple people were also injured and taken to area hospital, and a 30-year-old Vancouver man is in custody.

"That male was taken into custody at the scene by the crowd. It was a Filipino community event. The crowd immediately called police. We then took custody of the subject, and he is now in our custody being held," said Steve Rai, Interim Chief for the Vancouver Police Department (VPD)

VPD did not immediately provide a possible motive, but said they do not believe it was an act of terrorism.

"I'm pretty choked up. I don't even know what to say. This was a great day. A wonderful event. Huge community event. And to have it end in tragedy like this, it won't break us or the community but it's horrible," said Pete Fry, a Vancouver City Councilor.
