Thousands attend FSU vigil for victims of mass shooting
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Thousands of people gathered as Florida State University (FSU) held a "Gathering of Unity Vigil" Friday to honor the two people killed and several who were wounded in a mass shooting on FSU's campus in Tallahassee a day earlier.
University leaders including FSU President Richard McCullough and Senior Vice President Kyle Clark spoke at the event.
"We will here to lift each other up. We'll show the world what it's like to be part of the Florida State family," said McCullough. "We will never forget what happened. We will never forget the people that we lost," he continued.
"We are one family, one community," said Clark. "In this time of sorrow, we stand side by side to remind one another that we're not alone."
FSU had described the event as "an opportunity for us to stand in solidarity, offer support, and find strength in unity during this difficult time."
In a statement on Saturday morning, McCullough said the shooting had "shaken all of us" and listed counseling and psychological support services available to faculty and students.
"No one should go through this alone," he said.
